Operation Lighthouse is a multi-cultural event held twice a year and hosted by Lighthouse Charities, a local 501(c)3 Non-profit Organization that serves refugees ad at-risk families. Our goal is to temporarily relieve hunger and help families become self-reliant. Our 3rd Bi-Annual event will be held on Saturday, November 4th at William E. Snyder Elementary school. We will have a variety of entertainment and resources such as medical/eye/doctor exams, job assistance, hygiene and winter clothing distribution, multi-cultural dance performances, holiday informational booths for our local refugees and more.
Imagine going through tragedy, uprooted from all that you knew, losing family members, and ending up in a refugee camp with little to no hope of ever leaving. Imagine losing years of educational opportunities because they weren’t available to you, or there was no money to send you to school. Many children only ever dream of coming to America and going to school. For those that are lucky enough to do so, it is especially difficult for them because most of these children did not learn english prior to coming here. They are usually far behind in their classes from the years of schooling they missed. They also have had to deal with a difference in culture and curriculum (think US history, metric vs. standard US math, etc.). Despite these challenges, the refugee children of Las Vegas have been working hard in their classes to overcome their obstacles and gain an education.
Lighthouse Charities, partnered with CCSD and South Sudan Center of America, is hosting A Refugee Achievement and Graduation Ceremony. This ceremony will give these students hope for their future and celebrate their academic achievements by giving awards, scholarships, and recognition of hard work. By donating to this cause, you are rewarding this hard work and helping to provide educational support and encouragement to refugee students living in Las Vegas.
Funds will go to help pay for expenses associated with putting on this event, as well as provide the graduates with scholarships for college.
